Eni’s collaboration with the CNR

Our collaboration with the National Research Council (CNR) is focused on five strategic sectors for the energy transition and the achievement of the Net Zero target: operational excellence, decarbonisation, saving energy, circular economy and the local development of communities.

In this context, the main research and technological innovation pathways that we have identified regard advanced and low carbon footprint biofuels, the reuse and exploitation of waste, the capture, use and storage of COand magnetic confinement fusion. More specifically, we have opened four Eni-CNR joint research centres in Southern Italy: in Lecce, Gela, Metaponto and Portici, where our researchers and those at the CNR work side by side on a series of research programmes.

Research in strategic sectors

In Lecce, activities at the CNR Nanotec Institute are focused on the analysis of climate processes related to the destabilisation of the Arctic cryosphere, and more specifically permafrost, evaluating the effects of its thawing on the Arctic Ocean.

At the “Ettore Maiorana” Eni-CNR research centre in Gela, as part of the studies into magnetic confinement fusion, research guidelines are developed for plasma simulations, control and data management systems, the study of materials and innovative superconductors and diagnostics and power electronics systems.

At the Eni-CNR “Ipazia D’Alessandria” Centre in Metaponto, we promote innovative solutions for the more efficient use of water in the farming sector, particularly in areas of the world more susceptible to droughts.

At the CNR “Giampiero Maracchi” agricultural research hub in Portici our studies are focused on technologies for reducing the impact in the farming sector and producing biofuels from waste biomass.

Through these projects we promote the multifunctional use of the land in order to diversify crops and support the bioeconomy, in line with the SDGs and European research programmes.
