Port Said: our approach to local development in Egypt

hero-sviluppo-locale-port-said-egitto

Port Said is a town overlooking the Mediterranean, where our onshore facilities in Zohr, El Gamil and UGDC are located. Our business model aims to create long-term value for the local population through projects such as the primary health care centres in the Emirates and Al Garabaa, and the youth training school, also in the Emirates district.

Our approach aims to generate positive impacts on the communities in the countries where we operate, on the one hand with the development of renewable energy and emission-reducing technologies, and on the other with programmes for the local development of the area and population.

Project actions and objectives

Support services in the Emirates and Al Garabaa

In terms of health initiatives, our first step was to support the local health system by modernising the hospital in Port Said and launching training programmes for health staff and prevention programmes for citizens. This is all part of the Community Health Project that has enabled the centres in the Emirates and Al Garabaa districts to be set up to provide residents with regular access to health services, from emergency rooms to pharmacies, including paediatrics and vaccinations.

From access to energy to starting work

With a view to facilitating easier access to energy, the Coptic Monastery of St. Anthony is powered by solar energy thanks to a photovoltaic system we helped to install. But our actions in favour of  the inhabitants of Port Said also include education. The Zohr Applied Technology School (ATS), for example, enabled more than 500 students to follow training programmes, while through the Centre of Excellence for access to employment we supported those entering the job market for the first time. Training programmes are provided by the Youth Empowerment Programme.

Involving young people in community life

A youth centre to meet the needs of young girls and boys in Port Said has been set up thanks to the Community Programme. The project aims to encourage economic inclusion for the younger generation, their involvement in the life of their community and women's rights and empowerment. To do this, it is equipped with facilities such as a gym, library, sewing room and computer room, making the services available to all the people living in the Emirates district.
