In Pemba, Mozambique, we run a project in support of sustainable cooking that promotes the use of more energy-efficient cookers in the population, produced by small local companies. The initiative contributes to increasing the sustainability of the Rovuma Basin's natural gas utilisation programme, where we operate through the Rovuma LNG and Coral South projects. Thanks to 'Promoting Energy Efficiency and Clean Cooking', the name of the initiative, we support sustainable craftsmanship, creating jobs and new local entrepreneurship. The new appliances also have less impact on health and are more efficient for food preparation than conventional ones.
Together with natural gas production and liquefaction activities, from 2021 we will promote sustainable development in the country through partnerships and programmes that support the population in the areas of education and technical training, food security and economic diversification.

The new cookers for the city of Pemba are more efficient and sustainable in both environmental and health terms. Due to their slower and more prolonged combustion, they consume less charcoal, which makes them strategic in combating deforestation caused by cutting the wood from which charcoal is made for domestic use. By producing less smoke, they have a lower impact on families in Pemba, particularly children.

The distribution of the improved cookers among the most vulnerable families also involves local artisans. The entire community, in fact, is affected by the emergence of small factories within it, paving the way for a truly sustainable market for these new devices that can then be sold in other areas of the country.
