We are supporting the Iraqi government in addressing the water crisis in the southern region of the country, particularly in the Basra Governorate. Specific objectives to tackle the crisis include the supply of drinking water in accordance with international per capita consumption standards, the expansion of water networks, the improvement of distribution systems and the development of staff skills. To achieve these goals, we are working with the Iraqi Basra Oil Company (BOC) and local authorities to contribute to the national plan to improve access to water in the Basra Governorate. This includes the implementation of two infrastructure projects: the Al Baradhiya water treatment plants, with the installation of two new treatment trains, and the renovation of the Al Burjesia reverse osmosis plant for the production of drinking water.
In Iraq we are involved in numerous projects to support the population in the fields of education, healthcare and the environment and to promote access to water. We are also actively involved in the exploration and development of hydrocarbons, particularly in the Zubair field area in the Basra region.

Project actions and objectives
In Basra to improve water quality
Due to a combination of socio-economic and climatic risk factors, some of the Governorates most affected by water scarcity in recent years are located in the southern part of the country. These include Basra, with a population of around 4.5 million. To address the crisis that has hit southern Iraq in recent years, Eni in collaboration with the European Union, UNICEF and the local Governorate has launched a project to improve water quality for 850,000 people in Basra, including more than 160,000 children. Nearly 3 out of 5 children in Iraq do not have access to safe water services and less than half of all schools in the country has access to water.
