Our refinery in Sannazzaro, a high-efficiency hub

Workers walk inside the Sannazzaro refinery

The Sannazzaro de' Burgondi refinery in the province of Pavia, is one of the most advanced plants with the largest conversion capacity in Europe. Progressive technological investments have meant that it can currently offer a wide range of quality fuels, thus guaranteeing high standards of environmental protection and commitment to sustainability.

Project development and operation

A refinery with a high conversion rate

The Sannazzaro refinery is located in the centre of the Turin-Milan-Genoa industrial triangle, along the route of the oil pipeline that connects the Genoa terminal with French-speaking Switzerland. With such an appropriately chosen favourable location, it has led to the development of an efficient supply and distribution network via oil pipelines, enabling more efficient product handling and a drastic reduction in the need for land transportation.

Over the years, the Sannazzaro refinery has been gradually upgraded to transform heavier products into hydrogenated products with less of an environmental impact. The main technological improvements that we have made are:

  • hydrocracking plants that, when combined with hydrogen production, maximise the production of diesels
  • the gasification plant which produces synthesis gas from heavy oils that is free from sulphur and other pollutants
  • the deasphalting plant which is capable of recovering heavy oil fractions for subsequent conversion into petrol
  • the Eni Slurry Technology (EST) conversion plant, a proprietary technology that makes it possible to obtain fuels from heavy crude oil residues thanks to a special catalyst that we have developed and patented.
