Expatriate Careers

What is an expatriate?

An expatriate, or an international employee, is someone with specific skills and experience who is working on one of our projects abroad on a fixed-term assignment. Discover more below about the different types of international careers, the skills we look for and the benefits of joining us in an overseas role.

Types of expatriate careers

We offer a range of careers depending on the assignment you take with us. Occasionally, local employees may also temporarily work abroad in another Eni location for short periods of time. They’ll then return to their home country to continue working for the business as a local.

The types of international assignments you could work on as an expatriate include:

  • Residential assignments. You’ll live and work abroad for the duration of your assignment. If you’re relocating on residential status with your family, we can help with finding suitable housing, as well as financial assistance with school fees for all children in full-time education.

  • Rotational assignments. This involves a specific working pattern such as 28 days on/28 days off, and typically takes place in remote locations. You’ll be flown in and out of the location for your shifts, which means you can spend time off-shift at home or travelling for leisure.

Accompanied/family status

If you’re on a residential assignment, your spouse/partner and any dependant children may accompany you for its duration. We provide high quality support to ensure that your family can enjoy an excellent quality of life while overseas.

Unaccompanied/single status

Unaccompanied status would suit you if you’re single, choosing to travel without your family, or simply if accompanied status is not available in your working location.

What we look for

Our international expatriate employees join us in a wide range of disciplines, typically being experts in exploration, development, operations, support, or refining and marketing. Therefore, it’s essential that you have a strong and relevant background in the energy industry.

Assignments are often located in remote parts of the world, so flexibility and international mobility are key qualities we look for. You will also thrive on working with others from a range of professional and cultural backgrounds.

Eni operates in over 62 countries across the world, which means we have a vast range of opportunities available for expatriates to join us.

Why join us as an expatriate?

Our highly competitive benefits are benchmarked against the best in the international market. These include a competitive salary, private medical insurance, pension scheme, access to tax support, relocation and visa support, and a discretionary annual bonus.

You may move between assignments in different locations, but you’ll never be short of practical help, career development or opportunities to collaborate with expert peers. This means you’ll always have the support you need while growing professionally.
