The Taranto refinery is a key production site for the economy of the South and the country as a whole. It is directly connected to the Val d'Agri oil fields in Basilicata through a pipeline and is able to offer a wide range of fuels and combustibles. We also produce some of our sustainable aviation fuels here and are developing a project about green hydrogen.

The key refinery for southern Italy
The Taranto refinery has been in operation since 1967 and is directly connected to the fields in Basilicata through a pipeline from the Centro Oli Val d'Agri (COVA) in Viggiano, where almost half of the hydrocarbons produced in Italy originate from. After an initial treatment at COVA, the Taranto plants carry out the actual refining to obtain various types of fuels: diesel, jet fuel, petrol, naphtha, fuel oils, bitumen and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Finished products are shipped by sea via the wharf area or by land using the loading area.
Taranto contributes to the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The SAF from the Taranto refinery is obtained by co-firing the conventional plants with shares of used cooking oil (UCO) and frying oil. It is also involved in a project for the production of green hydrogen, i.e. from the electrolysis of water using renewable sources. The project has been implemented in cooperation with Enel Green Power and is supported by the European Commission.
To recover the used cooking oil collected by employees, the refinery has also launched the Oilà project, an initiative inspired by the circular economy, which has also been launched at other Eni sites and transforms a potentially environmentally harmful waste, such as used vegetable oil, into a new energy resource.
