The growth of bio-methane in Italy
With the purchase in 2021 of 22 plants in Italy, of which 21 for the generation of electricity from biogas and one OFSMW (municipal solid waste) treatment plant, Enibioch4in has laid the foundations for significant growth in the bio-methane sector. The company converted two plants from biogas to biomethane, with the aim of feeding more than 50 million cubic metres per year into the grid when fully operational, through the complete integration at all current sites of a further stage (upgrading) that refines the biogas to obtain biomethane. Production from the EnibioCH4in plants is intended to be fed into the distribution network and also for delivery to Enilive Stations.
The operation is part of Eni’s broader decarbonisation strategy, which aims to completely eliminate emissions from industrial and product processes by 2050, and represents one of the levers for the rapid growth of renewable productions, in order to make available to customers an increasing share of green and bio products (liquid bio-fuels and bio-methane), integrating with the increase in Eni service stations supplying CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) on the Italian network.

The circular economy and bio-methane
Bio-methane production falls within the circular economy framework, and allows enhancing farming, agri-industrial waste, manure and organic waste, thus promoting the establishment between the agriculture and energy worlds with a view to long-term sustainability.
Following decree no. 340 by the Ministry of Environmental Transition (now Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security) of 15 September 2022, laying down the provisions to encourage the bio-methane introduced into the natural gas network, and produced – in compliance with sustainability requirements, pursuant to Directive 2018/2001/EU of 11 December 2018 – by newly-built agricultural and non-agricultural plants, and by agricultural biogas-fuelled power production plants subject to reconversion, through the first public tenders for participation in award procedures for access to bio-methane incentives issued by the GSE (Gestore dei Servizi Energetici - Energy Services Operator), over 1.7 billion Euro available are estimated to promote the production of 2 billion cubic metres/year before 2026: 10 times the current production.
Bio-methane production
Eni intends to promote the entire bio-methane supply chain with Collaboration Agreements with several trade organizations, also dialoguing with biogas manufacturers for the production of bio-methane deriving from the anaerobic digestion of biomass, livestock effluent and OFSMW.
